Is making a million dollars really possible?
Becoming a millionaire is not as rare as you might think. In fact, about 7 out of every 100 people in the United States ends up being worth a million dollars or more in their lifetime. According to research from Capgemini, 500,000 new millionaires were made within the last year alone.
And what’s the best way to get get there? “Entrepreneurship provides the most direct path to becoming a millionaire,” according to an article by Lauren Beck published on Nasdaq.com.
Founders selling high-ticket consulting, online courses, affiliate marketing, or software that can be created once and sold endlessly with minimal overhead is one popular path to success.
But there are all sorts of “every-day” business ideas that get entrepreneurs to a million in revenue too. Lawn care businesses, scrap metal recycling, waste removal, industrial cleaning, and other service businesses have the potential to get you well beyond a million dollars in annual revenue.
It’s all about picking your path, making a plan and getting started. Making your first million won’t be easy, but if you’re willing to work hard, make adjustments when things don’t work out, and never quit, good things really can happen.
How the calculations work
Here’s how the formulas are used in this tool with examples.
Gross Revenue Calculation Example:
Revenue Target: $1,000,000
Selling Price per Unit: $997
Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) per Unit: $100
Profit per Unit: $997 - $100 = $897
Units Needed to Hit Revenue Target: $1,000,000 ÷ $997 ≈ 1,004 units
Total Revenue: 1,004 units × $997 = $1,000,988
Total Profit: 1,004 units × $897 = $900,588
To reach $1 million in revenue, you need to sell approximately 1,004 units of Product A at $997 each. With a profit margin of $897 per unit, you would achieve a total profit of $900,588.
Net Profit Calculation Example:
Selling Price per Unit: $997
Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) per Unit: $100
Profit per Unit: $997 - $100 = $897
Units Needed to Hit Profit Target: $1,000,000 ÷ $897 ≈ 1,115 units
Total Revenue: 1,115 units × $997 = $1,111,455
Total Profit: 1,115 units × $897 = $1,000,455
To reach $1 million in net profit, you need to sell approximately 1,115 units of Product A at a price of $997 each. With a profit of $897 per unit, this will generate a total revenue of $1,111,455 and a net profit of $1,000,455.
