If you can hit $100K in gross revenue, you’re doing better than most of small businesses out there. One study found 83% of small businesses owners make less than $100,000 per year in income. If you can hit this threshold, you’ve got to be doing something right.
How to think about this tool.
When I start thinking about a new business, I start by running my ideas through the $100K calculator. It’s not a tool, really, but a mental exercise that gives you the chance to explore what your future business might look like.
Here’s what I mean based on my own experience. Back in 2013, I started a blog about the food truck industry. My idea was to build an audience and sell $27 e-books, which was a popular way to monetize a website at the time. You could write the book one time and make passive income for years to come.
But the numbers didn’t lie… I’d need to sell 3,704 e-books per year to hit $100,000 in gross revenue. After a couple years of blogging, it became clear this wasn’t going to happen.
Fast forward six years and I eventually found a way to piece together a 6-figure business. Here’s where my $100K milestone revenue split came from after years of effort: consulting services (15%), food truck course sales (20%), advertising revenue (60%), affiliate commissions (2%), and of course those e-books (3%).
You read that right. The e-book I planned to build my business only ended up contributing a small amount of revenue. This is why I urge you to identify different paths to income early in the business. You can never be 100% sure what approach is going to work out for you.
Create a high-ticket product or service
As you run the numbers in this $100K calculator, I want you to consider adding one high-ticket product or service option. For the purposes of this post, let’s define high-ticket as something you could sell between $500 – $2,000.
The reason you should consider something high-ticket is you could quickly reach $100K. Here are a few ways you might do it:
- 50 sales at $2,000 each
- 100 sales at $1,000 each
- 200 sales at $500 each
As you can see, you could be closer than you might think to reaching this revenue goal.
Now I know what you some of you are thinking… Good idea, but I can’t sell anything for that much! But I challenge you to get creative and try to come up with an offer.
To help get the juices flowing, here are some examples of high-ticket offerings that could fit into the $500 – $2,000 range:
Offer Idea: A lawn care business could offer an “All-Inclusive Premium Lawn Care Package” priced between $1,200 and $1,800 for the year.
Details: Include services that ensure the lawn looks its best across every season. This might include:
- Four seasonal treatments (e.g., spring fertilization, summer weed control, fall overseeding, and winter preparation).
- Bi-weekly mowing, trimming, and edging.
- Soil testing.
High-Ticket Offer Idea: A group workspace could provide a premium membership offering priced between $1,500 – $2,000.
Details: 24/7 access, free coffee, reserved desk, monthly credits in meeting room, monthly VIP networking opportunities, better parking, and guest passes.
I really do believe any business can come up with a high-ticket offer that could pad their bottom line with a little bit of creativity and willingness to give it a try.
I hope this calculator helps you gain more perspective on your business idea. Give yourself the freedom to get super creative with this. Test different concepts and see what different product / service offerings could help you reach your goals. You’ll find there are many different paths to $100k.
